Cultural Identities

About Ria Alfonso, MSS, LCSWA

It is the most human thing in the world to need help. We are made to be interconnected. Sometimes our cultural stories and experiences can tell us “there isn’t time or money to be sad… que eso no es para ti”

Whatever brings you to therapy- whether you have experienced things that weigh on you, you are at a big transition moment, you know things can feel better but aren’t sure how, or you just want to feel more fully you, I am here to walk beside you.

We will work together to understand how your past informs your present and works toward more choice and capacity in how you experience your present and build your future.

So many of us learn how to move in the world based on the systems and relationships that shape us. Often those ways of existing are more reflective of what we have had to survive or what has been expected of us than what is most true to ourselves. Cultural identity and family are a huge part of who we are. Usually this comes with blessings and also with burdens. When the world isn’t built for you, you often have to “resolver,” to make it work. That can be heavy to carry, but you don’t need to do it alone.

I especially welcome people who are dealing with questions of gender and sexuality, people who might be trying to reconcile religious values with personal values, people who feel like they don’t fit in, youngest sons/daughters who are doing things differently than their family members, and anyone navigating a big moment of transition in their lives.

Therapy is a space where you have permission to feel all of your feelings and have room to be heard and supported. I offer a space that is collaborative, exploratory, and welcoming of all parts of you.

As a therapist I focus on building a trusting relationship with you and then weave in supportive tools. I accept you exactly where you are at and support you in moving towards more choice, creativity, and capacity in your life. We might incorporate art, breathing exercises, movement, or walks in nature. Every step of the way we will check in about what is working and what isn’t.
