José brings a wealth of lived experiences to his practice as a Gay Black Dominican-American Licensed Social Worker and Psychotherapist born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He is no stranger to the stigmatization of mental and emotional well-being in the communities he is a part of and the dangers of untreated mental health. Since 2016, he has been on a mission to cultivate safe environments and create bonds within diverse communities, spanning adult health management, child welfare, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and workforce development. Much of his work follows a person-centric philosophy, where he empowers clients by harnessing their inherent strengths. But his approach doesn’t stop there; he delves into the layers that make up each individual’s story, exploring the mezzo and macro influences that shape their world. With expertise in Gottman Level 1 Certification, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solutions-focused therapy, he is committed to guiding clients toward holistic wellness.
Beyond counseling, he has honed my skills in nonprofit management working with local and national nonprofits in various capacities. Also, he has years of experience as an educator in higher education institutions across New York and New Jersey. He holds a Master of Social Work and a Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) certificate from New York University and a Master of Public Administration and an Advanced Certificate in Nonprofit Management from California State University. He is fluent and provides services in both English and Spanish as well as currently learning Portuguese to extend mental health support to communities in Brazil.
José believes healing is important, but it is not a destination nor does it define someone, so start the journey with him!
José Rodriguez, (he/él) accepts various insurance plans for virtual therapy in New York.
