You grew up translating for your parents, holding the family together, being the proof that the sacrifice was worth it. Loving them deeply and still feeling suffocated by their expectations aren’t opposites; they live in the same body at the same time, and you don’t have to choose between them to feel better.
Most of my clients are the first in their family to go to therapy, to set a boundary, to ask for more. You understand your patterns intellectually and still can’t shift them because guilt, over-functioning, and keeping the peace were survival skills long before they were problems. That’s why they don’t loosen through logic. We go underneath, gently, in the language that feels most like home.
I’m a bilingual (English/Spanish) Associate MFT and first-generation Latina, raised in a Guatemalan immigrant household in Los Angeles. You won’t have to explain what it means to live between two worlds; I’ve lived it too. My style is warm and direct: no toxic positivity, no surface-level advice.
