Cultural Identities

About Israel Gonzalez Cruz, MS, LMFT

I’m Israel Gonzalez Cruz, MS, LMFT, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with seven years of clinical experience working with individuals, couples, and families. I provide therapy in both English and Spanish and have extensive experience supporting members of the Latino community as they navigate emotional, relational, and family challenges.

I believe therapy should be a place where you can speak openly, feel understood, and also work toward meaningful change. My approach is warm, collaborative, and practical. I want clients to have space to explore what they are experiencing, while also helping them recognize patterns, develop new skills, and find healthier ways of responding to the challenges in their lives and relationships.

Many of the clients I work with seek therapy for anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, family conflict, communication problems, emotional regulation, life transitions, and recurring patterns that have become difficult to navigate. I work with adults individually as well as couples and families who want to better understand what is happening within their relationships and create healthier ways of communicating and connecting.

In couples and family therapy, I help clients look beyond the immediate disagreement and understand the patterns that may be keeping them stuck. Couples may find themselves having the same argument repeatedly, struggling to communicate their needs, feeling emotionally disconnected, or unsure how to move forward after conflict. Families may be navigating parenting challenges, changes in family roles, differences in expectations, or difficulty communicating with one another. Therapy provides an opportunity to slow these interactions down, understand what is happening underneath them, and begin developing different ways of relating to one another.

My clinical approach draws primarily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and emotionally focused principles. Depending on the client and the concerns bringing them to therapy, we may work on identifying unhelpful thought and behavior patterns, understanding emotional responses, strengthening communication, developing coping strategies, setting healthier boundaries, or identifying practical steps toward change. I tailor treatment to the needs and goals of each client rather than assuming that the same approach will work for everyone.

Culture can also play an important role in how we experience relationships, family expectations, emotions, and even therapy itself. In my work with Latino clients, I recognize that issues such as family roles, cultural expectations, language, values, and intergenerational differences can influence the challenges a person or family is experiencing. I approach these conversations with curiosity and respect rather than making assumptions about what culture or family should mean to each individual.

For clients whose Christian faith is an important part of their lives, I can also integrate faith and Christian values into therapy when requested. Faith-based integration is always guided by the client’s preferences and is not a requirement for working with me.

During our sessions, you can expect me to be engaged and present in the therapeutic process. I will listen carefully, ask focused questions, help you explore patterns that may be contributing to distress, and work with you to identify practical strategies you can use outside of therapy. I believe insight is valuable, but I also want therapy to help you translate that understanding into meaningful changes in your everyday life.

Reaching out for therapy can sometimes feel uncomfortable, especially when you have been trying to manage things on your own or when relationship difficulties involve people who matter deeply to you. You do not need to have everything figured out before beginning. We can start by understanding what is happening now, what you would like to be different, and what steps may help you move forward.

If you are looking for individual, couples, or family therapy in English or Spanish, I welcome the opportunity to connect and determine whether my approach may be a good fit for your needs.
