Cultural Identities

About Martha Cervantes, LMFT

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you have spent much of your life being the strong one for others. Reaching out for support can bring up uncertainty, vulnerability, and even hesitation. If you are here, I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to take that first step.

I am a bilingual Latina therapist providing virtual therapy to adults throughout California in both English and Spanish. I am passionate about supporting members of the Latino community across generations, including immigrants, first- and second-generation individuals, and Spanish-speaking clients. Many of the people I work with are navigating the complexities of balancing multiple cultural identities, family expectations, life transitions, and the desire to create a life that feels authentic to who they are.

As a Latina therapist, I understand how culture, family, and identity can shape the way we view ourselves, our relationships, and our place in the world. In many families, we are taught to prioritize others, carry responsibilities quietly, and push through difficult emotions without asking for help. While these values often come from a place of love and resilience, they can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected from ourselves, or unsure of how to care for our own needs.

My practice was created with the intention of providing a space where clients feel seen, heard, and understood without having to explain or translate their cultural experiences. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, parenting challenges, stress related to immigration or acculturation, or simply feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, therapy can be a place to explore these experiences with curiosity and compassion.

My approach to therapy is both behavioral and systemic. This means we will work together to develop practical tools and coping strategies while also exploring the larger context of your life. We will look at how family dynamics, cultural influences, life experiences, and relationships may be contributing to your current challenges. Together, we can identify patterns, strengthen insight, build confidence, and create meaningful change.

I believe therapy should be collaborative. You are the expert on your life, and my role is to support you in identifying your strengths, navigating obstacles, and moving toward the goals that matter most to you. I strive to create a warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel comfortable showing up exactly as they are.

I offer virtual therapy and currently have evening and Saturday availability to accommodate busy schedules. I also maintain a limited number of reduced-fee spots as part of my commitment to increasing access to mental health care within our communities.

Seeking support is not a sign of weakness—it is an act of courage and self-investment. If you are considering therapy for the first time or returning after time away, I would be honored to be part of your journey toward healing, growth, and greater self-understanding.
