About Monica Fuentes Carbonetto, EMDR, LPC, LCPC

Seguros in-network:

Acepto Aetna, BCBS/Regence, Moda Health, Optum, UnitedHealthcare.

ENGLISH

I’m a bilingual EMDR certified therapist licensed in OR, WA, DC and MD. I work with clients who have experienced adversity, from early attachment issues or abuse to assaults by strangers and from a single traumatic incident to repetitive/complex trauma. I believe that trauma lives in parts of our brain that are difficult to change by talk therapy and, therefore, a bodily-aware modality can help the processing in a deeper and more long-lasting level.

Sometimes the past still feels present. Many of the people I work with arrive feeling stuck, on alert, or weighed down by something that won’t loosen its grip. What you’re feeling now is not a flaw in your character. It’s a nervous system that learned how to keep you safe, and is still trying.

Latinx culture

I work with adults who grew up between two languages, two cultures, two ways of being in the world. Much of what you carry didn’t begin only with you. It began in what your family had to keep quiet to survive. In the migrations that were never named. In the grief that didn’t have room. In the things you learned – without anyone saying it directly – not to say.

Cultural trauma and intergenerational trauma aren’t metaphors. They’re real patterns transmitted in the body, in the silences at the dinner table, in the way your system responds before you decide to respond. I work with people who have lived under the slow weight of being rejected, unseen, or asked to be less than they are – because of their culture, their language, their sexuality, their body, their beliefs.

I was born in South America and came to the United States as an adult. I know firsthand what it means to navigate languages, systems, and cultures. I understand the weight of loyalty to family, Catholicism precepts, and social expectations. As a Latina, I feel happy when I can help clients process their acculturation journeys, including the loss of loved ones and property, displacement, adaptation, and the opportunities that come with living in another country.

My training is bicultural by choice. I completed my licensure in Psychology at Pontificia Catholic University of Chile and earned my first Master’s in Clinical Psychology at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. I earned my second Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The George Washington University in the U.S.

EMDR

EMDR has a solid evidence base for reprocessing painful experiences that continue to affect us in our daily lives. I don’t promise that EMDR erases the past. What it does offer is a shift in how the body and mind hold that past, so that it no longer occupies so much space in the present and so that we can respond more freely, less conditioned by old fears and maladaptive patterns.

Collaboration

If a client has a therapist and wants to continue that relationship but also add EMDR (or if the severity warrants it), I’m always open to collaborating with other providers. While they offer a space for managing issues that require immediate attention and/or learning skills, I focus on trauma work.

I’m in-network with Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Moda Health, Optum, Regence, and UnitedHealthcare. Since I am located on the West Coast, East Coast clients should confirm authorization and coverage with their insurance companies.

Free consultation:

I offer a free 15-minute consultation. The idea of this consultation is for me to get a better sense of what you are looking for and answer your questions, and for you of whether what I can offer is a good fit for your needs.
