Cultural Identities

About Johanna Lee, LPCC

Becoming a mother can be beautiful and meaningful – AND it can also be overwhelming. Many parents enter pregnancy or postpartum expecting joy, but instead find themselves navigating anxiety, exhaustion, identity shifts, or feelings they did not anticipate.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, emotionally stretched, or unsure of yourself in motherhood, you are not alone in these feelings.

I am a postpartum & maternal mental health therapist who specializes in supporting pregnant, postpartum, and early motherhood parents as they care for their emotional wellbeing during this major life transition. My work focuses on helping mothers process the emotional changes that can come with parenthood and develop compassionate tools that help them feel more grounded and supported.

Many of the mothers I work with are navigating experiences such as:

Postpartum anxiety or constant worry
• Feeling overwhelmed or emotionally drained
Stress, burnout and overwhelm
• Identity shifts after becoming a parent
• Difficulty balancing motherhood, work, and relationships
Pressure to “hold everything together” for others

For many women – especially women of color and first-generation daughters – motherhood can also activate deeper cultural expectations around strength, sacrifice, and caregiving. These expectations can make it difficult to ask for support or acknowledge when we are struggling.

Therapy offers a space where you do not have to carry everything alone.

In our work together, I provide a warm, supportive, and culturally responsive environment where you can speak openly about your experiences without judgment. My approach is rooted in compassion-focused and culturally affirming care. This means we work to understand your experiences with curiosity and kindness rather than criticism or pressure to “fix” yourself.

Together we may explore:

• How motherhood is impacting your emotional wellbeing
Tools for managing anxiety, overwhelm, and self-doubt
Self-compassion practices that help you relate to yourself more gently
• Boundaries and support systems that help protect your energy
• The identity shifts that can occur during pregnancy and postpartum

I also approach maternal mental health from a holistic perspective. Emotional wellbeing is connected to many parts of our lives, including our relationships, family dynamics, sociopolitical issues, cultural identity, work rhythms, and the ways we care for our bodies and minds. By looking at these different areas together, we can create more sustainable and meaningful support for your mental health.

My goal is to help mothers move from feeling overwhelmed and alone to feeling more grounded, supported, and confident in their journey through motherhood.

Alongside therapy, I am passionate about increasing access to maternal mental health education and culturally affirming support spaces through the MillennialTheraMom brand. I offer educational classes, reflective resources, and community conversations that help mothers learn about postpartum mental health, practice self-compassion, and connect with other parents navigating similar experiences.

Motherhood was never meant to be carried in isolation. With the right support, it is possible to care for your mental health while also nurturing your family and the life you are building.

If you are pregnant, postpartum, or in the early years of motherhood and are looking for a supportive space to process your experiences, you are welcome here.

You deserve care, support, and compassion during this season of life.
