Cultural Identities

About Monica Polanco, LCSW

As a first-generation Latina in New York, I know well the exhaustion that can develop from navigating two cultures with opposing values. Your Latina upbringing taught you to be loyal, agreeable and self-sacrificing. Life in the United States demands assertiveness, independence and putting yourself first. It’s no wonder you feel squeezed out.

Take heart: you don’t have to choose between yourself or your culture to feel at peace.

I help first-generation Latinas and adult children of immigrants unpack cultural expectations, release their guilt and find their voice. We work on building self-trust and finding a balance between your goals and your family’s expectations.

In online therapy with me, you’ll reclaim your energy, embrace your bicultural identity and redefine your role in your family on your terms. That can include learning to say “no” to being the family problem-solver or pursuing that career opportunity even if your family doesn’t understand it. It can be done — respectfully and productively.

It all starts with you: who are you now and what’s important to you?

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I work with first-generation Latinas seeking online therapy in New York for burnout and the depression and anxiety that comes from carrying the weight of two worlds.

My style is warm, grounded and culturally informed. I help my clients understand why they feel guilty for setting boundaries, why they’re afraid of outshining their family members and why making themselves smaller is counterproductive — for everyone.

Growing up as a first-generation Latina often means being the strong one — the helper, translator and responsible one.

  • Have you mentally rehearsed how to help your relatives, only to give up in defeat because it would bankrupt you?
  • Do you feel incredibly lonely because there’s no one else like you in your family?
  • Do you find yourself biting your tongue HARD because your values don’t align with those of your relatives?
  • Do you visit your family with high hopes of connecting, but walk away feeling dispirited — and then blame yourself?
  • Have you wracked your brain trying to figure out how to bond with your relatives, but you just don’t like the same things?

You’re not alone. These are some of the complexities that come from navigating two cultures.

Before becoming a therapist, I was a newspaper reporter telling the stories of people who didn’t have a voice. Now, as a therapist, I help first-generation Latinas navigate the quieter, internal stories they’ve never had space to say out loud.

You’re not “complicated.” You’re navigating bicultural complexities and spoken and unspoken expectations. As a bridge between two worlds, you have a unique point of view.

You don’t need to explain your culture to me. I understand the cultural meaning beneath the words.

I help Latinas break generational patterns of guilt, silence and self-sacrifice. I help my clients step into their power and become more aligned with their soul path. I teach them practical tools that relax their nervous systems.

I created a free guide specifically for Latinas to help you create boundaries with ease. Sign up here: https://monica-polanco-therapy.kit.com/aba78abfcc.

Are you ready to ask yourself: “How good can it get?”

There’s no juice in survival mode — you deserve to truly savor your life. You deserve to stop clenching your muscles and finally breathe free.

Are you ready to experience relief from anxiety and depression and integrate your Latina and American identities (lasagna and rice, anyone?).

In our online therapy sessions, you’ll learn to make decisions without second-guessing yourself, set boundaries without drowning in guilt and create harmony between your culture and your dreams.

You get to lead the way, campeona. I’m here to support you.

If you’re ready to choose yourself, schedule a free consultation at https://www.monicapolancotherapy.com/contact. I’d love to see if we’re a good fit.
