I work with English and Spanish speakers whose multicultural identity is of importance to them and place a role in how they view themselves and how others view them. My clinical emphasis is on how culture and family can affect mental health. I work with individuals experiencing distress that causes them to worry, have flashbacks, experience self doubt, feel overwhelmed, feel sad, have difficulty functioning, isolate themselves, feel shame, and carry pressure from rules and expectations of others. As a therapist, I support individuals in gaining insight on how past and ongoing experiences that are related to their family or culture affect them and inform their thoughts, behavioral, emotional, relational, and mood patterns.
Our goal will be to strike a balance between honoring a culture, if that is important to you and honoring your personal identity and psychological needs. It is my philosophy that the behaviors that we often find frustrating in ourselves or that people criticize us about are things that we started doing because at one point, they helped us navigate a stressful situation. With that then, I do not judge my clients waste of being/patterns rather help them gain understanding of the function of these patterns. From there, we can begin to identify strategies that help them respond to stress and stressors in a way that feels more satisfying to them.
My approach is, thoughtful, holistic, mindful, compassionate, non-judgmental. I remain supportive of my clients and also at times challenge them toward their growth. I use up and close and questions, validating statements, reframing, reflection of meaning to guide my clients in processing and identifying solutions and strategies.
I use cognitive behavioral therapy to help make connections between thoughts, behavior, and mood; Attachment theory to identify how your parents/caretakers responses or reactions to you in early life may have affected how you relate to yourself and others; Dialectical behavioral therapy to help with distress, communication and more; Acceptance and commitment therapy to help navigate what changes you want to make and how to be mindful in day-to-day decisions and actions.
