My name is Mayra Douglas, and I am a bilingual and bicultural Licensed Social Worker (LSW). I immigrated from Mexico, and my personal and professional journey has shaped the way I practice therapy today. As someone who has navigated the experience of being bicultural and bilingual, I understand the unique challenges of holding onto identity, adjusting to a new culture, and finding a balance between two worlds.
I bring more than 10 years of experience in mental health and over 12 years in human services, supporting children, adolescents, adults, and families. My work has included family support through home visiting services, providing bilingual therapy to immigrant and Latinx communities, and developing programs for newcomer youth and families. These experiences have reinforced my belief that healing happens when therapy is culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and tailored to each person’s strengths and needs.
In my clinical practice, I specialize in supporting individuals through trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and family challenges. I draw from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), and solution-focused strategies. I am completing my TF-CBT certification and am in the process of obtaining my clinical social work license (LCSW) after successfully passing the ASWB exam.
Being bilingual in English and Spanish allows me to create a therapeutic space where you can express yourself in the language that feels most comfortable. I also bring my bicultural lens to therapy, recognizing that culture, identity, and community are central to well-being. Many of the individuals I work with are navigating immigration stress, intergenerational differences, or cultural adjustment, and I honor these lived experiences as part of the healing process.
My professional journey has also included extensive work in crisis intervention. I have supported individuals and families during moments of acute distress, including suicidal ideation, traumatic loss, and immediate safety concerns. Through these experiences, I have learned the importance of showing up with calm, compassion, and practical tools
to help clients move toward stability and recovery.
In addition to individual and family therapy, I have led programs that provide group support, resilience workshops, peer mentorship opportunities, and advocacy for immigrant families. This work reflects my belief that healing is not only individual but also collective; communities grow stronger when they have access to culturally attuned mental health care.
Beyond my clinical practice, I have contributed to academic writing. I co-authored a chapter on self-inflicted violence and the addiction to pain in the book Conductas Adictivas: Fenómeno Biopsicosocial (Addictive Behaviors: A Biopsychosocial Phenomenon). This contribution reflects my commitment to deepening the understanding of trauma and creating more compassionate approaches to mental health.
At the heart of my practice is the belief that therapy should be a safe and supportive space where clients feel understood and empowered. Whether you are seeking therapy for yourself, your child, or your family, I am here to walk alongside you. Together, we can navigate challenges, build resilience, and reconnect with hope.
If you are looking for a therapist who understands the complexities of being bilingual, bicultural, and navigating life between two cultures, I would be honored to support you on your healing journey.
